Warren homes and weather, in numbers
Most Warren homes are older and heat with gas, so furnace problems are a big part of what this site covers. These figures are public data, not claims about any company.
Detroit's normals show about 6,067 heating degree days a year against 847 cooling degree days. A degree day measures how far the daily average temperature is below (heating) or above (cooling) 65°F. Heating needs here are roughly seven times cooling needs.

Before anyone works on your furnace or AC
Ask about the license
Michigan requires a mechanical contractor's license with the right classification to install, alter or service HVAC equipment. An owner of a single-family home who lives there may do their own work. Ask any company for its license and check it with the state. This site does not hold a license and does not do the work.
Ask about permits
Except for minor parts, mechanical work needs a permit, and a contractor is responsible for permits on work done for an owner. Which office handles the permit depends on where you live.
Ask for it in writing
For bigger jobs such as a new furnace, Angi suggests getting itemized quotes from two or three companies so you can compare removal, permits and any ductwork.

Common questions
Cost figures are national. We did not find Michigan-specific figures, and we do not know what any local company will charge.
What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?
It is a rule of thumb for repair-or-replace decisions: multiply the system's age in years by the repair estimate. If the result is more than $5,000, replacing is often considered the better long-term choice. If it is less, repairing may make more sense. Both sources below call it only a starting point, not a final answer. Repair history, efficiency and warranty matter too.

How much is a typical HVAC service call?
The cost guides we found price the whole repair, not the visit fee on its own. Angi puts the national average HVAC repair at about $350 (a range of roughly $130 to $2,000 depending on the system and the failed part). For furnaces specifically, Angi's 2026 national average is $318, and most homeowners pay between $133 and $505. HomeGuide lists an AC service call or diagnostic at $75 to $200. These are national figures, not what a local company will charge. Ask any company about trip or diagnostic fees before you agree to work.

Is it cheaper to replace AC and furnace together?
Angi says it can be. Doing both at once can reduce total labor because the gas, electrical and duct work is coordinated in one visit, and it lets the contractor match the two systems. Angi also says that if both are over about ten years old it may be worth replacing both, but that you should talk to a professional first, and that you can often just fix a problem or replace one unit if the other is not near the end of its life. Ask for itemized quotes, both separate and combined.
What is the average lifespan of a furnace in Michigan?
We did not find a Michigan-specific figure. National guidance from furnace makers is 15 to 20 years for a well-maintained gas furnace, and Trane says 25 years or more is possible with maintenance and a few repairs. Angi gives a wider range of 15 to 25 years for gas and oil furnaces. These are general guidelines, not guarantees.

How often should a HVAC system be serviced?
ENERGY STAR recommends an annual pre-season check-up by a contractor: the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall, because contractors get busy once summer and winter arrive. The U.S. Department of Energy also recommends professional furnace maintenance every year. Between visits, check or change the air filter about once a month during heavy use. See our furnace tune-up page.

What is the average cost to replace a furnace and air conditioner in Michigan?
We did not find a Michigan figure. Angi's 2026 national numbers: a new furnace averages $4,814 (most pay $2,823 to $6,896), a new AC unit runs about $3,900 to $8,000, and replacing both together averages about $7,500 (range $5,000 to $12,500). Ductwork changes, permits and removal fees can add to a total. This is a national range, not a price from any local company.
